Different Types of Flak Jacket Used During World War II
The Flak Jacket was first introduced during the Second World War in order to answer the need for protection by soldiers and the army particularly the Royal Air Force. The flak jacket was made by the Wilkinson Sword Company that can protect the air force from flying debris and from the harmful effects of the German exploding shells. These German shells were causing severe injuries and damages to the unprotected torso during World War II. And to keep safe the lives of the soldiers and to reduce the injuries suffered, the flak jacket was invented. There are different types of flak jacket used during the Second World War and they are the following.
1. M-12 – This is a type of flak jacket developed by the Ordinance Corps. It is a 12 pound vest made of aluminum plates and nylon fabric.
2. Two piece laminated vest – This is a flak jacket made by Army Quartermaster Corps upon recommendation of the Ordinance Corps. This flak jacket is made of flexible laminated nylon duck which is considered that time as the best of all lightweight flexible materials. This is a two piece vest because it has a front and back armor for better protection. It comes with a groin protection and was later on redesigned to be a one piece vest. Full lamination is used for this type of flak jacket instead of spot lamination because full lamination gives more flexibility and comfort.
3. Doron Vest – This is a flak jacket made of Doron material developed by the Marine Corps for use by the Marines. The Doron vest used over lapping curved Doron plates on the upper part if the vest and nylon duck on the shoulders.
4. All Nylon Vest – This type of flak jacket uses flexible nylon which was discovered to be more superior to the Doron material.
