Brief History of the Flak Jacket
The term Flak Jacket does not only refer to the anti ballistic bulletproof vest that was popularly used during the World War II. It also refers to the modern body armor made of different materials. Below is a brief summary on the history of the flak jacket.
The use of different body armors can be traced during the early times as recorded in history. The early body armors used by humans were in the form of animal skin and leather. Humans use different protective covering to keep themselves safe and uninjured from combat and dangerous situations. With the continuing advancement of the civilizations, these protective coverings became more advanced. The animal skin and leathers were later on replaced by shield and body armors made from wood and metals.
When firearms were invented, these body armors made from wood and metals became obsolete and also ineffective. It cannot protect people from the negative effects and severe injuries brought by bullets and projectiles. Their only way of keeping themselves safe is to hide from natural barriers such as stone walls, rocks, trees and ditches. To address this issue, the silk body armor was introduced. But with the high cost of silk, the silk body armor became unsuitable. Various bulletproof vests were then made to satisfy the need for protection. These bulletproof vest and flak jacket patents were recorded in the US Patent and Trademark Office. Some of these patents were adopted by some police agencies but none of these gained worldwide attention until the discovery of the Kevlar.
The discovery of Kevlar started the soft body armors. It is a fiber that has great tensile strength and ballistic capabilities which can protect people from bullets and projectiles. Aside from being strong and almost unbreakable, the Kevlar is also lightweight. It is now the most widely used materials along with Twaron, Dyneema and Spectra for the production of flak jacket and different body armors.
