Different Fabrics Used on the Flak Jacket
The Flak Jacket is protective garment used by military and the police force in order to address their protection needs from the harmful effects of weapons, assault and accidents that they can possibly face while on duty and dangerous missions. The flak jacket is effective in giving ballistic protection because of the following fabrics that make the flak jacket.
1. Kevlar fiber – The Kevlar fiber is a sturdy and lightweight material that is used for soft body armor. The Kevlar fiber was discovered by an employee of DuPont Company in the 1970s. It was the first lightweight material that is used for soft body armors. The Kevlar fiber is a popular material of the flak vest because of its characteristics. The Kevlar fabric for protection is bullet and fragment resistant, has excellent thermal properties, flexible, excellent dimensional stability, comfortable, cut resistant, chemical resistant, puncture resistant and flame resistant. The Kevlar is also strong and is five times the strength of steel. These characteristics make the Kevlar flak jacket effective in resisting various ballistic weapons and other hazards.
2. Spectra Fiber – The Spectra fiber used on flak jacket is an ultra high strength polyethylene fiber that is developed by Honeywell. This is a non woven fabric that is incredibly strong, lightweight and has excellent ballistic protection capabilities. The Spectra fiber has greater tensile strength than the Kevlar fabric.
3. Dyneema – Dyneema is another fiber used on flak jacket that originated in the Netherlands. Dyneema fiber is a gel spun multi filament fiber that is created from ultra high molecular weight polyethylene. It boasts of the following characteristics: chemical resistance, low density, smooth, high strength, fire resistant, biologically inert, buoyancy, can withstand cold and hot temperature, sonic velocity and high electrical resistance. These characteristics of Dyneema make it useful for body armors such as the flak jacket.
