What is a Flak Jacket?
Flak Jacket is a protective garment used to protect the internal organs and ribcage from shrapnel and indirect low velocity projectiles. It keeps the wearer safe from the injuries caused by a fired bullet or projectile. Flak Jacket is the term used in World War II referring to the anti ballistic bulletproof vest used by the military as a means of protection from ammunition fragments. Flak Jacket is designed to be worn on the torso and is used in the battlefield at the height of the World War II.
The flak jacket was developed originally for the use and protection of members of the Royal Air Force from severe injuries and death caused by exploding shells coming from aircraft guns. These exploding shells were popularly called as “flak” that can bring severe injuries and wounds to the unprotected torso. The flak jacket was developed by the Wilkinson Sword Company to address the protection need of the members of the Royal Air Force. The flak jacket was made from heavy materials that added metal plates for better protection. The Flak Jacket may also take the form of the flak vest for better mobility and comfort.
The Flak Jacket is effective in protecting the wearer from ammunition fragments but was not effective from bullets and projectiles coming from pistols and rifles. It cannot also protect a person from a close range shot. Moreover, the flak jacket was also bulky and heavy. Soldiers in combat cannot fight well the enemies wearing this kind of body armor. With the introduction of the Kevlar in 1965, the flak jacket became obsolete because the body armor made from the Kevlar material is not only sturdy but also lightweight. The word flak jacket is still being today referring to the modern body armor particularly the Type III and above ballistic vests.
